Yakutat West Forelands Hydrology

Russel Fiord   Russel breakout

Yakutat Forelands Hydrologic Investigation for the City and Borough of Yakutat.

The advancing Hubbard Glacier blocked Russell Fiord in 1986 and again in 2002. If the blockage becomes permanent, the overflow will drain into the Situk River, which supports world-class sport and commercial fisheries that drive much of the local economy. Alaska Hydroscience is providing continuous streamflow data on the Ahrnklin River and Ophir Creek and will be providing comprehensive analysis of all streamflow data collected within the Yakutat West Forelands region. The hydrologic data collection and analysis from this project will improve understanding of regional hydrology and aid in ongoing and future management, restoration, and mitigation strategies for regional watersheds.
